Slabs

Gas Reduction Fired Ceramic
2014-2018

In the slabs series my intention is to create massive solid ceramic “test tiles” as a canvas for material experimentation with gas reduction firing. I invented a form, like the vase, that could be iterative and used to interrogate the colorful interactions of glaze, oxide based slip, and clay bodies. The slabs serve as prototypes for understanding ceramic materials, glazes, oxide reactions, and firing conditions. I chose the rough ambiguous vertical shape as a way to reference a mountainous landscape, tombstones, or painting.
