This series was an  exploration of ceramic materials. With the slabs, the intention was to create massive solid ceramic “test tiles” as a canvas for material experimentation with gas reduction firing. A two dimensional form was invented, like the vase, that could be iterative and used to interrogate the colorful interactions of glaze, oxide based slip, and clay bodies. The slabs serve as prototypes for understanding ceramic materials, glazes, oxide reactions, and firing conditions. The rough ambiguous vertical shape was chosen as a way to reference a mountainous landscape, tombstones, or painting, a scale shifting motif borrowed from the series of Constructed Landscape video works.
