Contact/Inquiry

Because matter can neither be fully created or fully destroyed,  all worlds are made out of the fractured pieces of previous worlds. I see these fragments as optimistic new beginnings, tools to weld my own thoughts into being.

In life, we both extract and are given fragments, made up of things, memories, dreams, and experiences. I am compelled to synthesize these disparate parts to find wholeness again. That said, these passing impressions are often fleeting, as in dreams. I have learned to pay attention to this dissolution, like the way things rust or dissolve into liquid.  I discover beauty in this decomposition of material and memory by highlighting the molecular, the fractured, the pulverized or the atomic. This inquiry leads to fascinating discoveries in the simple facets of life. I rediscover awe in these forgotten details, to understand how my psychological and physical environments are fabricated.

I am fascinated with how my urban environment is constructed, and yet I feel distanced from the world I inhabit. It is an overwhelm from the spread of parking lots and fluorescent light filled hallways. They aren't spaces built for us, it seems. To find humanity in this bleak landscape, I look to humor, beauty and awe in my practice. These qualities find humanity in these spaces and conditions, whether they are material, architectural, psychological, or temporal. In that way, I re-energize the corporate carpet.

To make my work I use craft processes like audio production or welding. In these methods, I find satisfaction of discovery through action. A joy in finding form from formlessness. That is where play begins. The playful quality of my work stems from the “yes, and…” ethos of my studies in the craft of Improv theater. With improv, I bridge uncanny connections, to create new networks of thought from seemingly unrelated pieces. It is a temperament that is flexible, relational, and alive. Play is an inclusive ethos. It allows room for humor and awe to share the same space, for a Pepto-Bismol drip to be both comic and strangely profound. It invites us to relax our preconceptions, and learn from new speculations.

When I put all these fragments together—steel, weeds, old melodies, hotel carpet patterns—they become teachers, ghosts, or speculative worlds. They perform: for each other, for an audience, or for no one. They exist in multitudes of time. Some parts grow. Some rust. Some play music. As a whole, they become an accidental archive—a leftover perspective. It is what demands to exist against all odds: lingering, singing, trying to grow.
