Slabs
2014-2018

I am fascinated with exploring color interactions in ceramics. In the slabs series my intention was to create massive solid ceramic “test tiles” as a canvas for material experimentation with gas reduction firing. I wanted to invent a form, like the vase, that could be standardized and used to interrogate the colorful interactions of glaze, oxide based slip, and clay bodies. I chose the rough ambiguous vertical shape as a way to reference a mountainous landscape, tombstones, or painting.
